Orly Fowl Play

Before we get to the swatches, I have to plug my blogaversary giveaway. If you haven't entered, you should! All right.

I haven't worn an Orly polish in a while, and although I know we're starting to see swatches of this year's fall collections, here's a polish from last fall's Birds of a Feather collection. When it came out, people were losing their shit over Fowl Play because yeah, it was shiny, but mainly because it's supposedly a really close dupe for OPI Merry Midnight. I never wanted Merry Midnight when it was available but in the interest of trying new things, I managed to track down Fowl Play last September? October? and let it languish in my Orly box. You know how I do.

I didn't know how opaque this would be on its own, so I layered two coats of it over two coats of OPI Lincoln Park After Dark, which I showed you back in February. (I think I could give you better swatches of LPAD now, but no rush.)

Two coats of Orly Fowl Play + one coat of Cult Nails Wicked Fast over two coats of OPI Lincoln Park After Dark.

Fowl Play = crazycakes. It starts off with a deep plummy purple jelly base, small silver glitter, slightly chunkier bright cobalt glitter, and duochrome flakies that shift from orange/gold to green/blue. You can get a better feel for the duochrome here in this picture under my terrible office lighting. (How terrible is it, Rach? So terrible that your favorite polish would look like shit and you would HATE IT.)

The formula and dry time on this polish were fine, no complaints there. I thought using two coats of Fowl Play over LPAD would help me achieve greater color depth, but one coat was fine, actually.

Fowl Play can be found at Sally Beauty Supply and Ulta in the core Orly line as well as through e-tailers, which is pretty insane, considering how batshit some people were for it last year. There were "reports" on MUA about displays of the Birds of a Feather collection that had been completely cleaned out during the first few weeks of its release because people bought multiple bottles of this polish for whatever reason (jerks). I don't know if they were the same people who left me without the one color I truly wanted from this collection, but it doesn't matter now, since both polishes are easy to find.

Here's the crazy thing: I've never seen Merry Midnight in person, but I think I might PERHAPS prefer it to Fowl Play. There are several comparison posts floating around the web for you to peruse, and though there isn't much of a difference, Merry Midnight's base seems lighter and brighter enough for me. I just won't bother trying to find it -- I wore Fowl Play for three days to make sure I was down with flakies, and ... I'm just not. More for you all, I suppose! So even if I did get a hold of Merry Midnight (which is a mythical feat at this point), it definitely wouldn't be an all-the-time thing.

Fowl Play = just enough of a foul for me to let it fly away. I know. I love bad puns too much. In all seriousness, though, guys ... what did you think? This was way, WAY out of my comfort zone so while I'm a little :( that I didn't like it, I'm also :) because I know it's definitely not for me.

  2. Yar. It was cleaned out in my city. I hope that jerkface is happy sitting on 15 bottles and knowing that it is now a core color (I think). Mwahahahahahaha.

  3. I almost bought this yesterday at Sally Beauty! So it is a core color now? I assumed it was when I saw it in the rack but I wasn't sure. That's awesome! Now I won't feel so rushed to get it, but I really should get it soon It's so gorgeous!

  6. I think I have Merry Midnight. I also think I may have given it away at some point? Which goes to show how into that polish I am (read: not). I don't blame you for not liking this one. The flakies in MM, and also the other flakie polish in that collection that I can't remember the name of, combined with the glitter, sort of reminds me of Ke$ha vomit.

That may have been way harsh, Tai. But as it is...meh.

    1. Not harsh. I totally feel you on this, though. I'm going to see if I can swatch my friend's MM just for shits and giggles ...

LOL @ Ke$ha vomit (and LOL at me for bothering to type out the $ sign instead of a regular "s"). Are you thinking of Shim-merry Chic? That one ... yeahhhhhhhh.
