The Long Haul: December 2013 + 2013 haulin' wrap-up

I'm posting this a little early because I have some other things I wanted to blog on Monday and Tuesday, so hit that cut tag to see my December and 2013 total. (OUCH. But ... kind of worth it?)

Oh, and I'm finally going to reveal my ~plan~ that I've been hinting at for the past few months. Hit that shit!

The rules: If I bought other items at one store along with polish, I won't include the tax, just the total amount I spent on polish. Additionally, swaps or anything I bought as a gift for someone else won't figure into this and won't count. 2013 TOTAL: $2739.53

Looking back on 2013: I know for a fact that there are people out there who spend WAY more than ~$2700 on beauty products/cosmetics/nail polish. I also know I made a lot of excellent purchases! However, considering that (1) I've been collecting since late 2008 and (2) it takes me forever to work through my stash ... I could stand to slow down by A LOT.

Drugstore runs are so bad and so good. If I've noticed any consistency in my spending habits, it all pointed to drugstore runs. I'm pretty good about ordering things online and hitting up Ulta, but those drugstores are another story. I'm sure I've said it before on this blog, but I have a tendency to pop inside drugstores for one thing with this, "Oh, what could possibly happen?" mindset ... and then I come out with five (or more) polishes. So, I have to crack down on the drugstore runs and really sort of space my visits out if there's something I need to have right away. This means paying more attention to the sales posts on Nouveau Cheap, which always is a good thing.

Will I continue this monthly tracking series in 2014? I can, if you want me to. I was just going to keep a separate chart on Google Docs, but if you'd like to see an actual blog post with my monthly totals, I can do that. I also was entertaining the idea of blogging my haul totals on a quarterly basis. Thoughts?

Girl, when are you getting to this plan thing? RIGHT NOW! :D

Okay. So, $2739.53. Right. I originally wanted to match that number in my savings account and put that toward 2014 travel, solo or with friends. I'm sure there'll be a couple of concerts I'll want to attend. There's a certain wedding I might have to travel for next year and I want to get a beach house for a week with some of my best friends. You know that shit ain't cheap, so it's best to save now!

There was my tiny little car accident back in November. *sigh* I forgot to mention it because of all the Christmas mania, but as of December 3, I became the owner of a brand-new car! (More on this next year.) The money I got from my insurance company is enough to cover half the cost of paying this off, which is great. I had $1000 saved already for travel, but that's going straight to the car. While the extra $1k will help me with that, I have to start saving that $2700+ all over again. I'm sure I can figure something out. The thing that sucks is that I won't be able to look for a new job or move next year because I'm pretty much tied to this car until it's paid off. I'm not thrilled about that, but I'm going to stop there because that's depressing me, LOL.

I'm not sure yet how I'm going to budget for next year ... should I start at $2740 and then deduct everything from that? That could be fun. Different. And I mean, fashion bloggers do this, so why not?

Did you buy anything amazing this year? Did these posts make you hyperconscious of your spending or make you feel better about your own? If you have any suggestions for next year's possible haul posts, I'd love to hear them! :) Thanks for sticking with me.

  1. LOL I am thrilled that $25 went toward Hare Polish!!!! :D

I like the haul/tracking posts...personally I do track my purchases on a spreadsheet (this includes have I swatched/used them, $ spent, notes/dates on purchases etc).

Considering I didn't have any idea what was going on in nail polish until like March or April, I've accumulated, well, a lot. A lot of amazing stuff too...and yes, a lot of purple holos. :D Holos & sand textures 4everrrr...

By the way: today I was at the vet office to pick up a pet med, and I noticed the desk girl had on blue nail polish. I was like, oh, I like your blue nail polish (showed her my Zoya Dream nails). What is that polish? Oh thanks, she said. I don't know the name, it's OPI. (it was a darker blue but I am not a big OPI fan so I have no guesses, and no she didn't ask about my polish at all)....

This baffles me, but I hear it a lot from the apparent "muggles" (as Sheila at Pointless Cafe calls them, very appropriately). It amazes me how many ladies do not pay attention to this.

Then at work a GUY notices my nails and says hey your nails don't match (I had silver JulieG on my ring fingers, and did try to explain the concept of "accent nail" to him, to no avail.

    Ah well! :D

    1. I figured you would approve, LOL. Thank you!!!

Yeah, I think I'm going to do a spreadsheet on Google Docs next year. Maybe. I stopped adding to my 2013 one because it was easier to format these posts for some reason. (My brain, it's weird.)

Oh my God. March or April? To quote "Game of Thrones," you sweet summer child!

Yeah, that happens a lot when I used to go to my old car dealership. "I don't know what this pink is but it's from the OPI Katy Perry" was something I heard a lot. Nail polish recall is NO JOKE! I used to be on the MUA nail board, so I kind of hate the term "muggle" as I heard it A LOT, but there's no better way to describe these peeps, I'm afraid.

Oh man. I remember doing my first accent nail look in 2010. That was ... special. I think I had on OPI Cajun Shrimp and ChG Shower Together and everyone was like, "Your nails are wrong." Amateurs! :P

Thanks for your lovely comments, they're such fun to read!

  2. Heh well cajun Shrimp and Shower Together are a pretty noticeable combination...

Hey speaking of Hare, I got some from llarowe sale: Star Tropics, Twilight Savings & A Positive. Unfortunately I finally tried to get ahold of Amethystos Finders Keepers Fall 2012 awhile back, and it got refunded b/c there is a problem with its pigment or something, bummer.

    1. ;)

Oh no! I hope you're able to get Amethystos one day ... my friends who have it love it. :(

  3. I know I've spent way more than this-and am kind of ashamed about it. I've decided I'm only buying from two brands I adore until my savings gets back up to $5000-since I'm at $2200 I have a way to go.

  4. PS I do LOVE these posts though!

    1. Thanks!

That's a pretty good strategy. Two brands? Damn. I wish I had that kind of discipline!!
